Moringa Publications Grow Exponentially As Interest Builds

Earlier this year I wondered how much attention Moringa was getting in the scientific community. I was curious to see the number of Moringa publications for a given year and how this number was trending over time. As a way to approximate that answer, I did a little research using Google.

I searched Google scholar for the term “Moringa” and recorded the number of search results, assuming that each search result represented a Moringa publication. I recorded that data from 1990 – 2014.

I admit the method is simplistic, but the trends are telling. The chart below shows the data I discovered. I added an exponential trend line for comparison. As you can see, the data correlates very nicely. In fact, this chart shows that the number of Moringa publications is growing exponentially.

This is exciting because anecdotal evidence of the benefits of Moringa either as fresh leaves or powder are overwhelming, but scientific studies have been somewhat scarce. In 2009, Thurber and Fahey from Johns Hopkins University published:

If the wealth of anecdotal evidence (not cited herein) can be supported by robust clinical evidence, countries with a high prevalence of under-nutrition might have at their fingertips, a sustainable solution to some of their nutritional challenges.

The number of annual Moringa publications has more than tripled since that article was published in 2009. Certainly not all the publications recorded above were clinical trials, but many are emerging. With the ever increasing interest in studying Moringa oleifera for both its nutritional and medicinal benefits, it will only be a matter of time before “robust clinical evidence” is obtained and published. We live in an exciting time where century old claims can be put to the test and vetted. I for one am looking forward to reading all about it!
